Visitors are often surprised to learn that each collection piece placed on our shop floor and online store is carefully designed and made in-house by our team.

Our studio and workroom sit just above our Melbourne retail store and it was very much part of my plan when dreaming of our first immersive retail flagship. It's filled with vast amounts of colour, textiles and joy that I can't help but smile every day when I arrive at my desk.

For those of you that have not visited, I modelled the space on the market scenes in Lagos, Nigeria - where I watched my parents for hours making decisions on the fabric they wanted to wear or furnish our family home. We would then make an additional trip to our family tailor and spend more time discussing the details and intricacies of said designs. Albeit, I found visits like that tedious, it also instilled in me the importance of value, quality and craftsmanship. It also informed me that the customer's point of view and opinion was of value.

That childhood memory has now become one of our guiding principles at Ulo - ensuring our customers buy a piece made incredibly well which they would want to wear for the rest of their life or have in their home. That coupled with the fact that I'm not a trend-based designer, meant that Ulo was only ever going to grow into something if we owned and cared for all parts of the process.

There is something quite magical about sketching, cutting, making and delivering to our customers in this space. It allows us to ensure the very best quality and craftsmanship, and also enables us to communicate directly with those who are enjoying what we create - listen to feedback and really pay attention to what our community wants.
-
Better still, it means that we can outline a clear path for our vision when it comes to sustainability and waste minimisation. I'll share more about this very soon, but for now, please enjoy a peak into our studio - where all the magic happens, and browse our latest collection here.
